Scrumple

Scrumple and her dog Splotch are preparing for a big day: her parents’ wedding. Her mission of being an exemplary bridesmaid is jeopardized when Splotch runs off with the wedding rings.
Cheerful and energetic Scrumple (7) and her dog Splotch are always looking for adventures that end up leaving them muddy and stained, but most of all full of joy. Today however, they are preparing for a big event: the wedding of Scrumple’s parents. Her sole mission is to keep the wedding rings safe and, above all, stay clean. But when Splotch runs off with the wedding rings, Scrumple follows in hot pursuit, jumpstarting a series of messy adventures.

Her neat-freak Aunt Toos tries to catch up with the duo, resulting in even more mayhem, turning the whole town upside down. Will all of them get back in time for the wedding… and ofcourse: will they be able to show up looking dapper?

Directors statement

To me, Scrumple is the filthiest heroine created by Annie M.G. Schmidt, The Netherlands' most well-known children's author. And that's why I love her so much. In the film, seven-year-old Scrumple and her dog Splotch go on a clumsy adventure and have to do their utmost to stay clean, to no avail. The heart-warming slob manages to get incredibly dirty every time, and make an enormous mess. Scrumple has all the potential to become a colourful, playful, endearing, comical film with a lot of visual spectacle. I am proud that, with screenwriter Tijs van Marle and the Lemming Film team, we have managed to mould the classic stories of my childhood heroine into one delightful, humorous and filthy film for all ages to enjoy.

I see this film as an ode to imperfection. The heart of the film is Scrumple herself: a sweet but imperfect girl who constantly does everything wrong, who messes up plans and gets incredibly dirty all the time, but is nevertheless unashamed and unabashedly herself. This causes a true Scrumple effect: with her open-mindedness, she defrosts the world around her and unwittingly gives others the confidence to let loose a little more in life. She is a role model for young children and - let's face it - for many adults. The wonderful adventure of the equally wonderful Scrumple is an ode to 'being a child'. With all the freedom and filth that comes with it. But above all, it is a story that shows that it is okay to be yourself. A film about accepting mistakes, and embracing imperfection. And in doing so, we touch upon the social value of Scrumple.
