When 17-year-old Dina, often called a ‘fake Moroccan’ in the Netherlands, travels to Morocco for the first time, she discovers just how complex the question is of what makes someone truly Moroccan.
Dina (17) was born in the Netherlands, but her parents are from Morocco. She has never visited Morocco herself, which has led people to call her a ‘fake Moroccan.’ During her first journey to her parents’ homeland, she discovers a world that is both unfamiliar and strangely familiar. This raises the question: what truly makes someone Moroccan? A question many Dutch people with Moroccan roots can relate to.
