Burny Bos Eigenwijsprijs 2024
In honour of Burny Bos, the legend of Dutch film and children’s literature, Cinekid is inviting all players in the Dutch film industry to nominate the most original directors and writers for the Burny Bos Eigenwijsprijs 2024. Presented by Cinekid, the award is a launch pad for a creative, talented children’s filmmaker who has developed an original craft.
Presented by Cinekid every two years, the Burny Bos Eigenwijsprijs recognizes the work of talented children’s filmmakers and helps them to further develop their career. The award both embraces and encourages creativity, originality and playfulness. In the words of Burny Bos:
“New stories don’t emerge by imitating what’s there, but by doing something that hasn’t yet been done. Headstrong children, unapologetically themselves, are often seen as troublemakers. But they’re the ones who go on to achieve the most.”- Burny Bos
Burny Bos made a huge contribution as one of the founders of Cinekid Festival.

The Burny Bos Eigenwijsprijs
The winner will be awarded a Cinekid Lion during Cinekid Festival this autumn. The award also includes an amount of €5,000 donated by the VandenEnde Foundation, giving film or series makers the opportunity to lift the limits on their creativity. No pressure – just the freedom to be inspired and generate new ideas. The 2022 Burny Bos award was presented to Mascha Halberstad (director of Knor and Koning Worst) during Cinekid Festival.
Who is the Burny Bos Eigenwijsprijs for?
Dutch filmmakers or makers of other media who meet the following conditions can be nominated for this award:
- They must be a writer or director (or both) of at least one feature-length film, children’s series or children’s documentary;
- They have a strong desire to develop their work in children’s media;
- They are still in the first stages of their career;
- Their work is original in terms of the themes it covers and its approach to them.
How does it work?
An expert jury will select three nominees from the entries. These nominees will be invited to talk to the jury in more detail about their work, working methods, and plans for the future. The impressions from these talks help to decide the winner in June. The winner will be officially announced on 7 October 2024 and handed the award during the Cinekid Awards. About Burny Bos
Burny Bos (1944-2023) was a pioneer of children’s television and spearheaded the development of children’s film in the Netherlands. He was the brains behind the beloved Ko de Boswachtershow and Villa Achterwerk children’s programming, as well as the co-founder of Cinekid and founder of the BosBros film production company. His work as a writer and producer created a large audience for children’s film and inspired countless filmmakers.
