On Thursday evening we presented the Golden Lions for the best media projects at Cinekid’s MediaLab; the playground that accommodates a diverse range of interactive installations, games & apps, virtual reality experiences and media workshops.
This year, the Golden Lion jury award for the best international media project went to Eden’s Adventure by artist Abner Preis. Eden’s Adventure is a virtual reality experience that allows the MediaLab visitor to embark on a short expedition to the history of contemporary media.
The jury, consisting of Erik Kessels (chairman), Giovanna Fossati, Roel Wouters, Rutger Wolfson, Elze van der Steen and Margit Lukács, praised the VR installation for providing a bizarre glimpse into the world of a travelling girl. ‘The artist of this installation made a beautiful narrated story. The girl’s journey is fun, educational and inspirational. The execution of this VR installation is maybe its best feature. Drawn in a crazy, rough and punk illustration style, something rarely used in this field of work. This makes the installation outstanding and stronger than all the other nominations.’
The Golden Lion Audience Award was granted to Canadian cartoonist and animator Paloma Dawkins for her virtual reality game Museum of Symmetry. All children who last week paid a visit to the Cinekid MediaLab, where the nominations for the Golden Lion are screened, could vote for their favourite installation, game or app. The winner of the audience award also receives a €3,000 cash prize.
In Museum of Symmetry, you can ride on rays, get on board of a hot air balloon or start a party. Dawkins created an explosive, feel-good universe. The game sweeps the visitor along through landscapes of earth, fire, wind and water, where lively 2D characters inhabit a 3D playground.
