Embark on an adventure in a world full of workshops, games, apps, VR and other digital artworks in Cinekid Festival's MediaLab!

The MediaLab at the Cinekid Festival's main location, Pathé Amsterdam Noord, will be open every day from October 21st to 27th, from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM. New this year is the MiniLab, a separate section for the youngest ones aged 4 to 7 years. Curious about what the entire MediaLab looks like during the festival? Below you'll find an overview of all the installations, games, and workshops from the 2023 MediaLab!

Theme 2023: Is this real?

You are welcome to discover the MediaLab exhibition with this years theme 2023: Is This Real?

Face swap, deepfakes, and AI chatbots: technology has assumed magical properties. And with the advent of widely accessible artificial intelligence, this has become clearer than ever before.

This year, Cinekid MediaLab takes you into the realm between reality and illusion; between the physical and the digital, and between dream and reality. Because when technology takes on magical qualities, how can you still determine what is genuine? And does it really matter?

Dive into the MediaLab and discover the magic and sometimes more darker sides of technology. Explore over 30 different interactive installations, workshops, apps and games, from established artists to young talents. Create mystical creatures with a hacked photocopier, make friends with imaginary beings, and challenge the computer with your artwork!

About the MediaLab

The Cinekid MediaLab aims to let children experience the creative aspects of media and encourage them to get hands-on with it. Through playing, exploring, and marveling, children learn about the effects of new media. Our current (perceptual) world is largely shaped by rapidly evolving digital technologies. The MediaLab is a collection of various digital (art)works that goes beyond mere observation. Children are given the freedom to truly acquaint themselves with this digital world. Self-discovery, play, and creation excite and inspire children, giving rise to new stories and connections.

The MediaLab in Amsterdam Noord is opened for schools from October 16th to 20th 2023.
During the festival, from 21st to 27th of October, the MediaLab is open to everyone - buy a ticket.
You can also visit the MediaLab in other cinemas, theaters or libraries - look at all the locations in the Netherlands.

Cinekid offers children the opportunity to stay connected with the MediaLab from home or in the classroom. It is also possible to explore the physical form of the MediaLab outside of the festival. The workshops and installations developed for the Cinekid Festival are made available at other locations throughout the year. Take a look at the possibilities for partnering with Cinekid.

Fake News Quiz

#quiz #fakenews #AI

Everyone sees fake news or disinformation daily. It proves to be hard to recognize. The younger generation thinks their parents ‘believe everything on Facebook’. However, their generation believes everything on TikTok, don't they? This installation tests your intuition: Can you tell the difference between real and AI-generated fake news?

#workshop #fakenews #acting

Have you ever seen a deepfake? That’s when you, for example, stick a celebrity’s face onto an actor’s body. It seems real and you can trick people with it. For example, you can have the prime minister say that everyone is going to get free ice cream! Make your own deepfake news item and think of who you are going to trick.

Creature Comforts

#AI #comfortcreatures #relax

A glistening eye blinks, a rodent looks at you, a larva crawls across an alien flower. Is it real? In Creature Comforts, artist Markos R. Kay shows how nature and technology are connected and wonders whether the differences are as big as people seem to think. These four, short, meditative videos provide an oasis of calm at the MediaLab.
