The Cinekid method

Cinekid has more than 30 years of experience in getting children actively involved in the creation and consumption of high-quality media. Cinekid’s educational activities are aimed at every child, adult and professional with an interest in children’s media.

Our offer consists of nation-wide film screenings for school and small-scale workshops, to ensure that children throughout the country have the opportunity to discover high-quality films and to stimulate their active participation in the field of media.

To provide for a broad and wide-ranging media offer in the future, it is essential that children in the Netherlands have the opportunity to discover the maker within themselves and to acquire new ways of looking at media and to reflect on what they see every day. Together with its partners of Netwerk Filmeducatie, Cinekid is committed to getting ‘learning about visual language’ on the national policy agenda. After all, in a society that is steadily more immersed in (moving) images as a means of communication, it is vital that children learn to look thoroughly and to critically assess the images they are exposed to.

To achieve this, we not only let children discover a diverse range of media, but also let them experience a variety of activities:
VIEWING: by screening various productions
MAKING: by letting children create their own media items, they learn about maker’s choices.
PRESENTING: by presenting their work and ideas in words or images, children learn to reflect on the choices they made.
REFLECTING: by talking about what they saw or made, they learn to VIEW in a different way, which completes the circle.

Cinekid exposes children to high-quality media. We apply the following selection criteria:

  • Is it appropriate to the child’s level of development?
  • Does it make children think about the world around them and about themselves?
  • Does it stimulate their capacity for empathy by offering new angles and perspectives?
  • Does it help to develop their taste by offering variety with regard to what they are already familiar with?
  • Does it stimulate their creativity?
